OUR HISTORY

Hikari Taiko was founded in 1978 by Tak Murata when taiko in the United States was still in its early development (the first North American taiko group was created in 1968). Based at the Southeast Japanese School and Community Center in Norwalk, California, taiko is one of many Japanese cultural activities conducted there.

OUR Mission

At Hikari Taiko, our mission is to support and promote awareness of Japanese-American culture by teaching and performing the traditional art form of taiko drumming.

CREATE COMMUNITY

Every member contributes in creating our own dynamic expression of taiko which we share during practice and at every performance.

SPARK PASSION

In Japanese, hikari means “light”. We strive to be the light that inspires creativity. With our drumming, we hope to illuminate a lifelong desire to play and appreciate taiko.
